Whitmore, Sonic Boom Six and Chairmen Of The
Bored @ Star And Garter, Manchester 02.10.03
The 2nd
gig of my 2 night stand following the ‘Over The Moon Tour I’
to the current capital of the north: Manchester. After a
horrible morning of puking my guts out (I have no idea why!) I
finally managed to book a coach ticket over to Manchester to
one of my least favourite toilet tour venues The Star And
Garter. I dunno if it’s a problem with Manchester or that
venue but the bands never sound great and the crowds are
neither big nor enthusiastic!

The Chairmen tonight were on fire, easily the best
performance and stage presence I’ve seen them do. Imploring
the crowd to move about and making jokey little comments to
the crowd and to Whitmore, it’s plain to see why these guys
are likely to be considered by Moonska their new ‘Jewels’ of
the recent signings. Good looking, playing the brand of pop
punk that hasn’t lost popularity since Green Day first hit the
scene. Whilst still occasionally fucking up the songs their
impressive almost Nickleback slowy will be definite favourite
of the crowds when they establish a fan base.

Sonic Boom Six playing to their home crowd
performed well however clearly not to the levels of the
previous night. Whether it was because they were drained, the
somewhat dire sound or the pretty staid crowd I couldn’t
identify it. ‘Blood For Oil’ was spat out with venom and
sounded good even with Barney (bassist) struggling through the
set with a broken guitar strap. The standout tracks was the
heavily changed ‘Northern Skies’ which seems to lost some of
haunting vocals but has been tuned more dub and ‘Silent
Majority’ which was superb and has been a stand out track
every time I’ve seen these guy’s.

Whitmore played a bit of a stormer in comparison
to the night before, whether that was to do with Jagermeister
they were drinking through out the set or the fact they were
getting more female attention than the night before but
something defiantly inspired them to reach heights they hadn’t
reached the previous night. ‘29 Times’ sounded superb as did
‘Listed’ as the white boy reggae pop punk was plied to the
crowd. Unsurprisingly Alison ended the set but with the nice
touch at the end of the little ska version of the chorus left
us with a smiled. A better set by far than previous
night.
