Driving an hour to go to an upstairs room in a sports hall of a huge Rochdale school is not where you expect to spend your usual Friday nights! But this is where you found me tonight amongst the hundred or so ‘mini moshers’ out for the weekly fix of gigs and music. It’s a really good set up here if a little impersonal.

After watching a fairly average metal band and a quite terrible punk band both with line ups with the average age of around 14 it was time for the nights main event, Rochdale’s own boys ‘Chairmen of The Board’

These 3 lads, good looking buggers too (bastards!) played top notch Green Day/Blink 182 (as they later admit) pop punk fare. The band steamed through the first three songs with little or no interaction with the crowd. This should be something that needs working on and should come with gigging experience.

The Blink cover of 'Dammit' showed off their excellent vocals and actually sounded better than seeing the real thing live at Leeds Festival last week. Though sometimes it did seem lacking in other places, like they where trying to remember parts to songs. This caused a problem especially on their last number as lead singer Ben forgot the last chorus until bassist James took over.

All in all a band with some serious potential, a bit of a rough diamond that will be moulded and shaped with experience and touring. Though if tonight’s 40 minute set was anything to go by it won’t take them long.

Chairmen Of The Bored - 3.5/5

I thought i'd reply to your review and explain why we had those "crap bands" on, the aim of The Backdoor Project is to bring bands here to play, keep the door price down for the kids, and to educate their music tastes. We also like to encourage the kids to get into bands and play also. The bands that played there the other night it was all their second gig ever, i didn't think that that did that bad considering. The night was thrown on at the last minute due to the fact that the veue pulled The Splitters, and Smoke like a Fish because that they didn't think that we could cover their asking price. This is because The Backdoor numbers have been down lately and we were taking less money on the door than the bands were asking for.We are a non-profit company and any money left over is saved up and we put on music projects where kids get to learn music skills and form bands. This is where GRAEME got together with The Fractions and we have pushed them forward as much as we can. Over the last year we have been putting on mainly punk and ska bands and our "mini Moshers" have been left out in the cold, they want metal bands to play and they also want to see their friends "crap bands" also playing...hence the local band showcase. Our next gig will be for the "mini Moshers" when "sugarcoma" come to play on 26th september, the local support will be Seven Second Burn and Jonestown Massacre, £5 on the door all ages.

Rob i think your comment is childish and you should remember that we were the ones that helped you guys from the start and still do!!!! The Backdoor keeps those kids away from rochdale's Streets and you know how bad they can be...Ha Ha

What you’re doing at the Backdoor is very commendable and I wish we’d have had something like this in Bradford when I was 14, it would have made my life and my folks life a lot easier than worrying about me in strange unsupervised venues like T&C in Leeds.

To put on local bands is the best way forward as well not only do they get a good band to put on their CV but supporting also helps them learn stage craft. And from a venues point of view brings in punters and they don’t demand such huge fees.

Everything you lot have done is very commendable and anything like this deserves support, just because I expressed my opinion on a couple of supports doesn’t mean I don't appreciate the hard work that goes into find and funding events like this.

Good luck with the Sugarcoma gig in a few weeks as I’ve seen them before and they will go down a storm with the ‘mini-moshers’ and any help you wish to have from me or anyone at theSka is gladly given i.e. band contacts for lots of music types or merchandise etc.

And also i never mentioned "crap bands" anywhere in the post i called 'fairly average' and 'quite terrible' meaning that the metal band werent crap, i'm not that harsh and because I didnt really see the point of 'name and shaming' on a ska website I left their names off!

Nat a note to let you know how much you (and Eddie) are appreciated for the work you do for the backdoor, and the bands which have evolved directly from your efforts do you credit , and the service you give to the youth of Rochdale is enormous. And some of the bands youve put on have been outstanding , battleska , spunge , zen baseballbat , whitmore , skank like frank , stuntface , and loads more.

And a thank you for giving Joe the oppertunity to be in a band and compose and perform music , and for all the gigs you keep putting his way , please dont let robs comments cast a shadow over your opinion of the rest of the band, They Need You ,

Yours Joes Dad
